You’re sweet enough, eat less sugar
There is a new sweetener called Nectresse being promoted by the inventors of Splenda. They are claiming the product is all natural. Here is the breakdown:
1. It is made from a heat-stable extract of an Asian melon known as monk fruit, or Lo Han. It is 150 times sweeter than sugar, so you don’t need as much. However, it isn’t the primary ingredient.
2. The most abundant ingredient erythritol, a sugar alcohol commonly derived from corn, the vast majority of which has been genetically modified (GM) in the U.S.
3. The other ingredients are sugar and molasses which is refined and can be derived from GM sugar beets.
So three out of the four ingredients used in Nectresse can be derived from bioengineered crops, and two of these ingredients are refined sugars. And since erythritol is a sugar alcohol, as well as the most abundant ingredient in Nectresse, they can claim under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines that Nectresse contains zero calories per serving.
The best sugars (in this order) to get your sweet tooth satisfied are:
1. Local, raw organic honey
2. Stevia
3. Raw, unrefined sugar
4. Agave nectar (minimal)
