The “Weight Loss Meal” that doesn’t work
Grilled chicken breasts, steamed broccoli & brown rice:
This is the usual “go to” New Year’s resolution meal that doesn’t create lifestyle change, tastes bland, and can cause digestive disturbances.
The reasons this meal is not supportive for your fat loss goals, healthy lifestyle and overall vitality are:
• White vs. Dark meat chicken: Due to marketing white meat is “healthier”, it is more available and taste preferred than dark meat. However, dark meat poultry has more myoglobin proteins, the proteins that transfer oxygen to the muscle cells. Chicken and Turkey dark meat tend to contain more vitamin A, K, folate, pantothenic acid, minerals as selenium, phosphorus and zinc, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, vitamins B6 and B12, amino acids, iron than white meat. In my practice, I tend to see overconsumption of white meat chicken, which can lead to digestive issues, bloating, and boredom of food.
• Steamed Broccoli vs. Raw or Sautéed: Raw vegetables contain more nutrition and fiber than cooked, however if you have a compromised digestive tract, we recommend cooking your vegetables for optimal assimilation of your vitamins and minerals. Adding oil to your vegetables improves your essential fatty acid consumption and most of all, the flavor. The two oils to cook with and that provide healthy fats and are heat stable are Coconut and Grapeseed oil.
• Brown Rice: Improper digestion and heartburn occur and is exaggerated if you have poor digestion and combine protein and starches in the same meal. Try separating your starches and proteins during the day and combine one or the other with healthy fats and vegetables.
For example; Brown Rice & Coconut Curry Vegetables or Dark Meat Chicken & Coconut Curry and Vegetables. Enjoy.
