The Dirty Dozens

The EWG (Environmental Working Group) has released their Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Additives and what produce to purchase organic. It includes additives already linked to health concerns, those that have been banned or restricted in other countries, and substances that simply have no business being in food.

12 Food Additives to avoid attention to on your food labels:

  1. Nitrites and Nitrates
  2. Potassium Bromate
  3. Propyl Paraben
  4. Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
  5. Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)
  6. Propyl Gallate
  7. Theobromine
  8. Natural and Artificial Flavors
  9. Artificial Colors
  10. Diacetyl
  11. Phosphates
  12. Aluminum Additives

12 Produce items to purchase organic. Another rule of thumb is the more water the fruit or vegetable contains the easier it is for pesticides to remain in it.

  1. Apples
  2. Strawberries
  3. Grapes
  4. Celery
  5. Peaches
  6. Spinach
  7. Sweet Bell Peppers
  8. Nectarines (imported)
  9. Cucumbers
  10. Cherry Tomatoes
  11. Snap Peas (imported)
  12. Potatoes

And to stay extra clean buy organic blueberries and hot peppers. Also, look at the numbers on the sticker and 9 is fine non-GMO and organic, 8 is not because it is all GMO.

When we are subjected to stress and toxins, the organs are challenged to release chemicals and can cause damage and disease.

Stay clean and clear,
Heather Fleming, C.C.N.
