Are you practicing Offensive or Defensive Nutrition?

We have the different seasons of the year, and now, up here on the mountain, we have wild weather and animal seasons.

We rolled (literally in the tiny house on wheels) into the area on a stormy January, which was a coyote, mountain lion, and bear season, and rats who ate the wires under my car hood. Then, in the spring, we moved into baby season, including bunnies, squirrels, birds, quails, and rattlesnakes.

Summer continued with adult rattlesnakes, road runners, field mice, and the heat wave season. Now, we are in fire, tarantula, and scorpion season. My neighbor had a bear on her porch last week, so that season is still full-on. Then, our usual all-around neighbors are a momma deer with two babies. And, of course, I have named all of these families like a Master Snow White up here.

Did I move to the Outback? Or I may be moving back to New Zealand, where no poisonous animals exist.

I have watched my nervous system transform from a super-scared cat attached to the ceiling to a more confident yet hyperaware gazelle as I stride in nature with a heightened sense of hearing and intuition.

When things feel uncertain or perspectives feel fearful, do you tend to go into defensive mode? Or can you calm your nervous system to keep your senses more aware?

We can feel insecure, react, and be defensive when under threat.

Where does this stem from?

When we feel safe in our physical and psychological well-being, we are not in a defensive or resistant state.

I call this Acceptance Mode.

When I used to be restrictive and controlling with food, I was in a defensive and resistant state more often than I was relaxed, confident and calm.

I always felt worse when I was in resistance. Isn’t it interesting that our immune system and insulin resistance become compromised in this state?

How to achieve Acceptance Mode:

  1. Neutralize your reactivity: If you just got cut off in traffic, your nervous system has gone into fight, flight and freeze. You can neutralize this by taking deep breaths, telling yourself you are safe now, and shaking off your suffering.
  2. Forgive: Forgive yourself and the other person for this traffic situation. When you stay in a struggle and repeat the obsessive thoughts, you will only keep hurting yourself.
  3. Observe which Limited Belief got poked: I never have enough time, money, support, happiness. Nothing ever goes well for me. Everyone else gets to be happy. The list can go on and on.
  4. Let it go: You can not control everything, and the addiction to this is what can ignite your stress hormones. Place your hand on your heart and remind yourself you are a magical unicorn.
