Can you feel the ‘weight’ of your thoughts and feelings & Guest Speaker tomorrow!

Do your feelings sometimes get the best of you? Do you feel weighed down no matter what size your jeans are?

There is an antagonist inside us that puts pressure on and shoulds us. Let’s start by feeling safe instead of causing stress to our bodies and nervous systems.

We have reptilian brains and a complex psyche of emotional needs. Our brains are in a tug of war for safety and trying to create new healthy daily habits.

The basal ganglia brainstem of our brain is referred to as the reptilian or primal brain, as this structure is in control of our innate and automatic, self-preserving behavior patterns, which ensure our survival and safety.

Think of your limbic system as your built-in alarm system, which goes off whenever it perceives a threat or potentially painful situation.

It plays a vital role in “defending” and keeping you safe and comfortable.

This is why we ‘think’ we need to do extreme actions, but our mind is trying to keep us safe in our comfort or discomfort zone.

Your amygdala scans your environment regularly to keep you safe from harm, either from past programming or future threats.

When you experience a negative emotion, your brain responds by sounding the alarm to alert your hypothalamus, which causes a cascade of hormones from your brain through your entire body.

You can shift your brain chemistry by slowing down, taking deep breaths, and refocusing your thoughts. These steps allow your brain’s frontal lobes to take over for the irrational amygdala. When this happens, you have control over your responses, and you won’t be left feeling regret or embarrassment at your behavior or food choices, which leaves us feeling heavier in our hearts and bodies.

This month’s guest speaker has a tremendous Emotional Fluency chart to help us work with our emotions in a conscious and supportive way. It helps us identify which emotions cause us to feel stuck or the feelings we often ignore.

I met Coach Emily Boorstein while teaching at Rancho la Puerta. She will share more about how we can work with our emotions on Wednesday, March 20th, @ 5 pm PST/8 pm EST via Zoom:
